Environmental issues are now central in the context of CSR. More and more companies are introducing environmental concerns into their internal management systems, in order to reduce their waste, their consumption of resources or their impact on the environment.

Corporate Social Responsibility is truly institutionalized in the corporate world. CSR is undoubtedly a strong lever in terms of communication. An ambitious and well-thought-out CSR policy will necessarily have a positive impact on the company’s brand image, whether through its corporate brand or its employer brand. It is essential today as an inevitable practice for the success of any business; A means of measurement and evaluation which brings companies closer and closer to the expectations of its stakeholders, a voluntary commitment for a good cause and to rules beyond the standards of the State, and an object of criticism seen the lack of genuine altruism in some cases.

Why and how to implement a CSR approach within a company? This is what Ecospare explains to you, telling you what steps to take to be a more responsible company and what benefits you can expect from it.

The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR), what is it?

CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) brings together all the practices put in place by companies with the aim of respecting the principles of sustainable development, that is to say to be economically viable, to have a positive impact on society but also better respect for the environment.

The European Commission defines CSR as “the responsibility of companies vis-à-vis the effects they have on society”.

For its part, ISO gives the following definition: “the responsibility of an organization vis-à-vis the impacts of its decisions and activities on society and on the environment, resulting in ethical and transparent behavior which – contributes to sustainable development, including the health and well-being of society; – takes into account the expectations of stakeholders; – respects the current laws and which is in accordance with international standards of behavior; and which is integrated throughout the organization and implemented in its relationships “.

Corporate social responsibility is based on three main pillars:

The environmental pillar: among the environmental priorities are the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, recycling, and the use of renewable energies.

The social pillar: this is one of the most important aspects of CSR, so much that we also speak of Corporate Social Responsibility. It brings together issues such as health, education, well-being, respect for human rights, etc.

The economic pillar: a CSR company supports the local economy by sourcing from local organizations where possible and by investing in its region. It is also transparent with its investors and clients.

CSR, a factor of contribution to societal objectives of sustainable development and to the performance of the company

The primary ambition of a company that practices CSR is to have a positive impact on society. This is reflected in its desire to respect the environment while creating economic growth. A balance that cannot be built without the help of its stakeholders (employees, clients, suppliers, regional stakeholders, etc.).

In addition to the benefits related to environmental protection, the implementation of a CSR approach in the company allows it to attract new executives and retain those already in place by working on its employer brand. CSR activities help create a sense of belonging to an eco-responsible community among its staff, and encourage them to better use resources in order to make the eco-responsible vision of the company a reality; they often end up becoming more aware that the company is focused on CSR and sustainability. New talents are committed to being associated with brands with a positive image and recognized for the moral values they carry.

Companies that undertake to put this strategy in place will therefore voluntarily integrate its dimensions beyond the legal framework imposed on them, by putting in place good practices, such as the promotion of diversity within employees or by opening up to new economic models.

CSR is a new framework that will allow the company to better respond to the challenges it faces and the expectations of its stakeholders who are increasingly demanding on this subject. It is also a new vision of its role and responsibility in society.

Measuring and evaluating the impact of its activities on the environment and society allows the company to better identify and therefore better control the risks it could face; but also to act more effectively to reduce its imprint, better adapt to new constraints and unlock new opportunities.

The establishment of a system for measuring and monitoring the actions taken is essential to guarantee transparency and the evaluation of the evolution of the results of the CSR approach.
